There’s been a lot of talk recently about proposals to award
our MPs a £10,000 per annum pay rise! – Taking them to around £75,000p.a. +
expenses, pension and other ‘perks’!
The Prime Minister; being an ex-PR man, is against this (of
course if one is a multi-millionaire, the refusal to accept a further 10k on
your salary is like refusing the offer of a ciggy from your mate!) his
reasoning being that the hard pressed public, who have not seen their pay rise
in years, will not wear it!
However, I think he misses the point entirely; we in the
real world only receive pay rises for working hard and doing an outstanding job
in the eyes of their employers.
Why not adopt the proposal from Michael Gove, which he recently
offered to teachers. That they should be subjected to ‘performance related pay’
Now considering the state of the nation, its finances,
austerity and poor growth, I don't think many MPs fall into this category
and considering how disenfranchised the public are with the political class, this could save the taxpayer millions!
However, I suspect they won’t except performance related remuneration either, so
I have another suggestion.
Why not put them on part-time contracts and half
their wages, unless they agree to give-up all their other employment/fees/consultancies, while they
are in office
Let’s see how many of them swallow that!
