Love her or hate her, support her or rage against her, the Baroness
Thatcher was a global giant whose stature can only be greatly increased when
compared with the political pygmies who have so far succeeded her on both the national and
international political stage.
I very much doubt that we will see her like again.
My sincere condolences to her family, friends and true
colleagues.
Curmudgeon, I have already commented on Mrs Thatcher on Tameside Citizen, it is repeated here -
ReplyDeleteLike yourself TC, I too have a divided opinion on Thatcher.
She did destroy communities by virtually closing down the coal industry. Plus she was the main cause of Britain losing it's manufacturing base.
What was once described as the "Workshop Of The World" is now nothing more than a nation of call centres, takeaways and service industries.
On the other hand she did bring the out of control unions to heel. She also had the conviction to recover the Falklands from the Argentine bully boys - which modern politicians would do that?
I would say she was the most effective leader since Churchill and while not agreeing with a lot of her decisions, the Poll Tax was a fairer method of paying for local services than the present system.

Curmudgeon, I can go with your analysis of Mrs Thatcher's years in power. And I ask one question. If her rule, her decisions, were so obnoxious, why were her policies not reversed by her successors?
ReplyDeleteYou are absolutely right, they weren't reversed because they were pursueing the same policies, especially regarding Mining. Tony Benn closed down far more pits than Mrs Thatcher! But socialism always was a vicious ideology, so naturally it follows the behaviour of its supporters can always be relied upon to be equally hateful. That fact has now been borne out by the sad sight of brain dead teenagers who weren’t even born during Lady Thatcher’s premiership, celebrating her passing.
DeleteThese people were too young to remember a country on its knees during the Wilson, Heath and Callaghan years, in hock to The IMF and afraid to say ‘no’ to the Trades Unions; and today’s socialist leaders certainly won’t remind them.
Ironically, their sickening behaviour simply reinforces everything the Baroness said about socialism. If she could witness this, no doubt she would dismiss their behaviour with the contempt it deserves and simply point out that they don’t know any better!
