POLICING - A MOCKERY OF THE WORK THEY DO

When will the powers that be wake up and smell the coffee with regards to policing in the UK?

I came across a story the other day about a gang of youths who *steamed forty five mobile phone shops and stole hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of handsets and tablets.

The 12 youths who are aged 17 and 18, targeted Carphone Warehouse, O2 and Vodafone stores across London, in a three month spree last summer.

The report says , ‘Croydon Crown Court heard innocent members of the public were often caught up in the fracas, as the gang pushed them out of the way after rushing into the shop, crowding into customers, and violently wrenching the stock from displays complete with wires.’

The gang were sentenced yesterday after they all pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit burglary. They were caught on the stores CCTV systems.

Out of 12 offenders only half were actually locked up, with the longest sentence being 18 months! Which in effect means that they will be out again in 9 months due to guilty pleas.

To make matters even worse, a ‘politically correct’ police spokesperson said, “These convictions should act as a warning that the Police will robustly and swiftly deal with those who use intimidation to fulfil their greed."

What! …Why did he not take the opportunity to rant and rave about soft sentencing, tell the assembled press about the low morale of the police and rip-up on his warrant card?

Why wasn’t  a spokesperson from the judiciary dragged in front of the press to explain that their punishment amounts to less than a week for each shop! …My God, that should deter them from ever doing anything like that again! They’ll go inside for a few months, smoke a bit of weed, get a daily workout and get free supplements, see all their pals….oh and don’t forget some new games on their PlayStations. I’m sure that this sentencing will provide a much welcome boost to public confidence in the entire criminal justice system.

But the responsibility for the state of the CJS rest squarely with Governments because it’s successive Governments and politicians that have destroyed the ability of the CJS to dish out proper punishments for those who commit crime.

Conservatives: Tough on crime or just tough on cops? Labour: Tough on crime. Tough on the fighters of crime, Coalition: Recommending our police forces should look at bringing in "outside" managerial talent into its higher ranks!

…And they say crime doesn’t pay.

  2. Oh for the days of real justice up to the 1960's when the do-gooders and the EU didn't have a say. Those were the days when the police and courts were feared. Sentences nowadays are a joke and the lowlives know it.

There are too many graduate fast trackers in the police 'service' these days who have no idea about proper police work. The real bobbies must be really frustrated with the CPS and the courts.

The sooner we are out of the EU, the sooner we may turn things around but I won't hold my breath on that one.

Curmudgeon, why do so many of us think this way and yet keep voting the same old shower of politicians into office?

    1. Bill, If we’re talking Tameside, a donkey wearing a red rosette would win.
If we’re talking nationally, well we re-elect the same people over and over again and expect that this time it will be different.
A wise person once said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. Well, by that definition, we in Britain must be barking!
I believe it was Groucho Marx who said, "Those are my principles. If you don't like them, I have others." He should have been a politician.
