CHALK ONE UP TO THE GOOD GUYS

LOCAL CAMPAIGNERS have won their bid to prevent TESCO’s in Hattersley from going ahead with plans to introduce 24 hour deliveries coming to fruition. Despite advice from Tameside council’s Head of Planning to pass Tesco's application, the Scrutiny Panel, faced with over 225 letters of objection, almost unanimously voted against it! In fact, only one Councillor voted for it!

It just shows that with a dedicated team, the council can be defeated and their draconian decisions can be reversed.

Well done to The Longdendale Community Group! Their commitment and effort made the difference.

Without their sterling work, there is no doubt that the application would have been passed.

Ironically, when the objections to TESCO building their controversial store were being collected; which resulted in well over 3000 signatories being presented in Downing Street, Tameside's Cllr Fitzpatrick was quoted in the local press as saying, “he’d never heard of this group!” ...Well, I've got a feeling he has now!

Hopefully now that will be an end to it, with local residents able to breathe a sigh of relief and look forward to sleeping peacefully in their homes, without the disruption of juggernauts constantly thundering past their homes, 24 hours a day - 7days a week!

  1. Dear Sir ,in your latest blog you praise Longdendale Community Group for the splendid job they did in mobilising people to object to Tesco's new delivery hours .I feel however that you were a little remisss in not giving credit to the three local councilors who supported the objectors.Coun.Peet speaking at the speakers panel represented all the ward not just the most vociferous.

  2. My sincere apologies to Cllr Peet, I was not made aware that she had stood ‘shoulder to shoulder’ with the group on this important matter. It really makes a refreshing change to hear of a councillor putting constituent’s preferences over council dictates.
