Apparently Cllr Barrie Holland was complaining that planning
permission has been granted to build four, 4 bed- detached houses on
‘green belt’ land in Littlemoss, despite there being a 52 name petition against
it.
Why he should be unhappy, baffles me. He should know by now
that no system is likely to be better than those who administer it.
But hang on a minute, wasn’t he one of the councillors who
approved the planning decision by Tameside Council to build the 90,000 sq ft TESCO
superstore in Hattersley, despite criticism from the Commission for
Architecture and the Built Environment regarding suitability, a disregard for
public transport and there being a 3500 name petition against it; notwithstanding
the fact that this particular petition was presented in person to Ministers in
Downing Street!
It would seem that the councillor has just discovered that local
democracy is not about gathering together a bare majority of compliant cronies
whose sole contribution to local government is to rubber-stamp the joint
recommendations of the Leader and his executive cabinet.
Barrie, welcome to democracy, Tameside style.
